Project Description
I (Björn Axelsson) have been awarded a grant from the Swedish Internet Infrastructure Foundation to work part-time on the mms implementation of free media players during 2007. My current employer also supports this project by providing work space, equipment, web space and administration.
The goal of the project is to improve the quality and functionality of free implementations of the mms protocol.
The reasoning behind the grant is that much media content in Sweden (and elsewhere) is delivered through mms, which many free players have limited support for. By improving mms support in free media players, the media can be accessed in new ways and by more users.
I will focus on one or two major players, probably vlc and mplayer, but also produce extendend protocol documentation and a generic mms protocol library. I have some open-source development experience and hope to be able work closely with the development teams of the affected OS projects.
